Dog of the year 2006
I am proud to announce that Dusty "Longsuffering" Thompson is this years winner of the "Dog of the year" award. Truth be told it was always a one dog race and the award was always his unless he lost it by doing something rating high on the scale of catastrophic dumbness which, in his younger years, he has been known to do like that whole unfortunate turkey incident....but it turns out this year (or 7yrs in his counting) was a good one (or 7).
Apart from the obvious attributes of a "Dog of the year" such as the ability to chase big sticks over dry or wet terrain, lie in the sun and perform a variety of security functions, Dusty showed a great improvement in his swimming speed as well as his ability to endure, what can only be described as at times , torturous affection from his fellow household member Ruth.
Here follows 2 examples of award winning behaviour:
The weather was a warm 25 degrees and the water in the Nahoon river not much off that. The stick was big, the left eye was still slightly off-centre, the saliva was dripping, the whine was operating, the focus was incredible, the legs were shaking and the commitment level was well over the sane 150% mark. The big stick flew through the air landing in deep water and the chase was on. Over the shallows Dusty easily pulled away from Terra Thompson but as he entered deeper water the gallop became a paddle. Keeping calm Dusty began to use his "Dog of the year" abilities by keeping on a direct path for the big stick while simultaneously keeping a check over his shoulder at the progress of his adversary. This move is commonly seen on the roads where it is performed by K-53 learner drivers. It is known as "THE OBSERVATION". As his competitor closes in on him Dusty employs another award winning talent....2nd gear. By putting his head down and yelping he manages to eke a couple of extra yards of pace out of his limited swimming technique and, in a photo-finish grab, emerges on the far side of the river with the big stick.
The second example is a look at the heart of the dog and evokes words such as longsuffering, patience, endurance, tolerance and self-denial. Say no more....
